FCC's Reclassification Proposal Could Affect Security

This summer, the Federal Communications Commission proposed a sweeping change in its approach to telecommunications industry regulation, seeking to reclassify Internet and broadband services under Title II of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, a designation that would subject ISPs to the type of regulation typically reserved for monopoly telephone companies.

Although at first glance this appears to be largely a battle between the FCC and the large phone and cable companies, the security industry should take notice because of its growing reliance on public Internet infrastructure for networking of applications, particularly video, but also access control, alarm management and emergency notification.
