IQinVision adapts the iPhone App Model

IQinVision has begun building a selection of downloadable applications for its line of digital cameras, modeling the approach Apple is using with its popular iPhone.

Users of IQinVision cameras can currently choose from a menu of 15 applications that boost the value of their devices, said Paul Bodell, chief marketing officer for IQinVision. The group includes two from third-parties. Agent Vi is providing downloadable analytics. Viasys also is providing analytics along with a tool for filtering unwanted video at the camera. Most of the apps are designed to interact with image data gathered by the camera before it is altered through processing or compression, thereby affording users that much more of a direct return on the premium they pay for a greatly enhanced image.

The program also offers a way for users to add immediate value to their HD and megapixel  cameras, said Bodell, Analytics and perimeter alarms may useful on a camera mounted near the side entrance of a building, and access control apps might fit well on a camera near the main entrance.

Some of the apps can run independent of the video management system, which can make loading and use easier in certain circumstances. During a phone interview, Bodell demonstrated IQaccess Access Control/Remote Attendant. The tool downloads via Internet connection to any PC. In the demonstration, the software linked to a camera that was mounted above the unmanned reception desk in IQinVision office. When a visitor enters, the software triggers an immediate notification on employee PCs, and opens a pop-up window to show the camera image. The visitor can then be greeted appropriately.

In addition to small offices, Bodell sees practical applications in small hotels and motels, where often one employee is on desk duty. If the employee is the back office when a guest arrives, the software will alert her to come out front.

Some downloads are free. Licensing for other apps can range between $50 and $200 per MAC address. All are available on the IQinVision web site.

More apps are in the pipeline, Bodell said, especially as the implications of digital, HD and megapixel imaging become better understood as data that can be processed, manipulated and mashed-up, to be colloquial. "Once you stop thinking about it as a camera, and start thinking about it as a PC with a lens on it, you begin to think about what else you can do," Bodell said.

IQinVision's idea is torn straight from the Apple iPhone book. Unlike previous smartphones, which came with a small library of compatible applications, Apple opened its iPhone platform to any developer with an idea. There a now 134,000 iPhone apps available through Apple's iTunes store alone, ranging from weather to games to Kama Sutra guides. The program gave iPhone users much greater ability to personalize their devices. In the three years the iPhone has been on the market, it has been credited with changing the consumer perception about smartphones from that of souped-up cellular phones to personal computing, entertainment and communications devices.

Similarly, as the capabilities of HD megapixel cameras become more apparent, users will come to see them as not simply souped-up surveillance cameras, but access and delivery devices for rich data.

IQinVision App Descriptions

* IQrecorder On-Camera NVR Software -- Transforms an IQeye Pro Line network camera into a stand-alone network video recorder perfect for small systems, remote applications or as a back-up to an existing video management system.  IQrecorder stores video on-camera using no Bandwidth and can easily be configured to send video to a network server or network-attached storage.

* IQmedia player -- Enables viewing of IQrecorder on-camera video from any PC.

* IQfinder and IQmanager -- These free downloads manage any IQeye IP video system from single camera installations to enterprise-wide systems.

* IQstream -- A free utility that allows PC-based viewing of IQeye network cameras without a browser. Good for use at trade shows and demos when using a lower power PC or laptop.

* IQaccess Access Control/Remote Attendant Software -- Converts any IQeye Pro Line camera into an access control/remote attendant and notification system. Good for monitoring remote doors or sensitive areas, IQaccess works seamlessly with an existing video management system.

* Agent Vi video analytics -- Combines with IQeye network cameras to provide scalable, high-end, feature-rich video analytics that increases the RoI of video surveillance systems in many vertical markets. Agent Vi's analytics turns IQeye cameras into intelligent sensors that provide real-time alerts, forensic analysis and business intelligence capabilities.

* Viasys -- An upgrade for IQeye Pro Line cameras that dramatically reduces bandwidth and storage by filtering unwanted video at the camera using the Viasys suite of video analytics. It provides reliable real time alarms for intruder detection and perimeter protection in indoor and outdoor environments with features like electronic fence, trip-wire, 3D aspect ratio, directional detection, sabotage/tampering detection. The Viasys software requires no additional servers or hardware.

* IQauthenticate On-camera Video Authentication Software -- Embeds a unique encrypted digital signature into every image from an IQeye Pro Line camera to ensure images have not been tampered with. The signature helps identify which IQeye standard or HD megapixel camera produced the image and will detect if even one pixel has been altered on an image after it left the camera. Good for evidence and e-documentation.

* IQNight Light -- Rapid response software for fast scene changes.

* IQcameo - A multistream function that saves bandwidth and storage by transforming HD megapixel IQeye Pro Line cameras into multiple "virtual" cameras.

* IQfocus -- An analog video output that is active for several minutes or until the camera receives a request from the network for video.

* Exposure Window -- Optimizes the exposure for backlighting.

* Light Grabber -- Optimizes for low light, low motion scenes.

* Digital Image Cropping -- Optimizes video for 4:3 or 16:9 wide screen format.

* Privacy Masking -- Blocks sensitive areas in the field of view from viewing and recording.
