Reads Veins Where and When Fingerprints Won't Work

Biometrics and strong authentication are a natural pairing, but at least one popular biometric, the fingerprint, doesn't always work, whether because a print is marred physically or there's a barrier between print and reader, such as grease or a glove, or privacy concerns about leaving behind traces of a print.

At ISC West, L-1 Identity Solutions was demonstrating its latest biometrics access control device, the 4G FingerVein Station, which the company said solves those problems by reading vein patterns, not prints. The device integrates with the other devices in L-1 Identity's line of biometrics readers and can be managed with the same software, so enterprises may have a mix of the devices with a common look and feel, said Shiraz Kapadia, chief operating officer, EAD, for the company.

Kapadia explains more and demonstrates the product in the following video produced by Security Squared.
